The Annual Summit on technology, intellectual property (IP) and industry-academia partnerships in India took analysed the future of IP in the country

In a recent summit on technology, IP and industry-academia partnerships hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi, Sabinsa's Global CEO and Managing Director Shaheen Majeed gathered with innovators and academics to discuss the future of IP in India.

The CII is an industry group that was established to bolster India’s competitiveness in the global arena, while also fostering sustainable growth.

CII’s initiatives span a wide range of sectors, driving innovation, economic development and responsible industry practices. The CII National Committee on IP, for which Shaheen serves as vice-chair, plays an instrumental role in recognizing and rewarding innovation.

Shaheen participated as a leadership panelist in the Session on “Shaping the Decade: India’s Future through Technology, IP, and Industry-Academia Leadership.” During the session, he provided insights on how India’s IP ecosystem can drive technological advancement and foster vital partnerships between industry and academia.

He highlighted the significance of building a robust research environment and the role of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) in bridging the gaps within India’s R&D framework.

In his presentation, Shaheen focused on the critical role of IP in fostering innovation and driving economic growth.

Drawing from the example of the US Bayh-Dole Act, he discussed the transformative impact of academic-industrial collaboration on commercialising research and creating successful innovations.

Priorities moving forward

Shaheen, alongside other thought leaders, discussed key priorities such as incentivising talent, ensuring academia remains at the
forefront of cutting-edge research, and fostering a thriving innovation ecosystem in India.

In his closing remarks, Shaheen called for a greater emphasis on Ph.D. programs that address societal problems and advocated for increased industry funding for research, particularly for doctoral students.

He urged for stronger partnerships between government, academia, and industry to strengthen India’s R&D capabilities as the nation enters a transformative decade.
