A study published in the International Journal of Probiotics and Prebiotics has highlighted the role of Lallemand Health Solutions' Cerebiome probiotic in supporting cognition and beauty from within through the gut.
The open-label clinical study looked into the effects of Cerebiome on 35 healthy women aged between 30 and 45 during an 8 week period — where participants were given 3 billion CFU of the psychobiotic once a day.
Researchers at the Rosell Institute for Microbiome and Probiotics assessed how the nutraceutical could impact each volunteer's gut health and cognition, as well as a user's general complexion.
Cerebiome offers cognitive benefits
The primary outcome of this study was to measure how Cerebiome could impact stress levels, so participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire at days 28 and 56 to compare with baseline measures.
Through the PSS-10 measure, researchers concluded that daily use of Cerebiome could reduce stress by 18% in four weeks, and 31% by eight weeks.
These findings highlight the benefits of probiotic supplementation for stress, and that long-term supplementation may be favourable for the best results.
Sleep quality was also boosted in the group receiving Cerebiome, with volunteers noting a significant increase in their ability to fall and stay asleep.
Participants also reported improved wakefulness during the day.
Notably, 79% of the participants receiving Cerebiome also experienced improvements in their mental wellbeing.
Cerebiome as a beauty from within ingredient
Although the main focus of the study was how Cerebiome could modulate the gut-brain axis, the team at the Rosell Institute also looked into how the probiotic could impact skin health and hydration.
In this study, the participants experienced a significant increase in skin hydration — with a 21% improvement noted after 8 weeks on the face and an 18% improvement on the body.
During the supplementation period, 85% of women reported that their skin felt more hydrated and moisturised, and skin firmness was increased by 12% after the eight week period.
Researchers also highlighted that Cerebiome could:
- Reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles by 17%
- Reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles specifically by 21%
- Encourage skin smoothness (82% of participants agree)
- Improve the skin's overall texture (82% of participants agree)
“We are thrilled to share these findings of our latest study on Cerebiome," commented Elodie Aragon, Product Manager at Lallemand Health Solutions:
"This psychobiotic not only supports gut and mental well-being, but also significantly enhances skin health, offering a holistic approach to beauty and wellness. There is a big potential for the nutricosmetics brands, as the market is valued at $8.09 billion in 2023 and projected to reach $11.91 billion by 2028, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8%.”
Probiotics, in particular, offer a promising avenue for maintaining overall well-being and positively impacting skin health, with 66% of people acknowledging the link between skin health and overall well-being.
Formulating with Cerebiome
Cerebiome is available in a range of dosage formats, including soluble powders, orodispersible powders, capsules, sachets sticks and more.
According to Lallemand, it is suitable for formulation with ingredients like riboflavin and folic acid, which are ideal for skin health and anti-ageing products, as well as vitamin B6 for stress/mood and skin balance.
They also recommend combining the probiotic with melatonin and vitamin B6 for sleep formulations, and vitamin C plus copper for skin brightening.
The formula is available in various dosage formats including soluble powders, orodispersible powders, capsules, sticks, sachets and more.
