dsm-firmenich's GLYCARE 2FL 9000 can now be marketed and sold within Indonesia, making it the 165th country with access to the company's HMO portfolio

dsm-firmenich has obtained approval from the Indonesia Biosafety Clearing House for its 2'-FL human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) nutraceutical, GLYCARE 2FL 9000.

The functional ingredient can now be used in flavoured liquid milk drinks, and is suitable for those who are three years and older.

This approval means that dsm-firmenich can now market and sell GLYCARE 2FL 9000 to functional beverage and supplement manufacturers across Indonesia — further expanding its global reach.

This follows the approval of dsm-firmenich's HMO ingredients in India, the UK and EU, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

HMOs are a key health-boosting component of human breast milk, and are now considered the "gold standard" for infant nutrition, according to Anita Wichmann, Lead Expert in Regulatory Affairs for Early Life Nutrition, Medical Nutrition and HMOs at dsm-firmenich.

"Emerging evidence shows a myriad of health benefits provided by HMOs in early life nutrition — which can be seen throughout chilhood and beyond," she notes.

Prior research has suggested that GMOs can support digestive health and the gut microbiota, while also benefitting the immune system within infants, children and adults.

"By securing Indonesian market access for GLYCARE 2FL 9000, we open new opportunities for manufacturers to create nutritional solutions that support the gut health of children and adults."

GLYCARE 2FL 9000 is produced by dsm-firmenich's proprietary Escherichia coli K-12 DH1 MDO strain, and is classified as safe for consumption as a food ingredient.

Testing has also found that the ingredient shows no potential to cause allergies.

“Ingredients from our GLYCARE HMO portfolio are now available for use in more than 165 countries, and we hope to facilitate access to HMOs globally," concludes Elaine Tan, Regulatory Affairs Manager for the Asia-Pacific team at dsm-firmenich.
