Layn Natural Ingredients has announced plans to launch its novel beta glucan ingredient, Galacan, at this year's Expo West — a key trade show for the nutraceutical industry.
This follows the company's facility expansion, which will optimise its ability to manufacture pure and sustainable bioactive ingredients through precision fermentation at a large scale.
Galacan, the company's new heteropolysaccharide derived from precision fermentation will be manufactured at the newly expanded site in Guangxi, China.
The ingredient, according to Layn, has been designed as an advanced, water-soluble alternative to traditional beta glucans derived from mushrooms, oats and yeast.
Galacan: a next-gen beta glucan solution
Beta glucans have long been touted for their health benefits — spanning from immunity to gut and metabolic wellness.
Therefore, Layn Natural Ingredients wanted to create a beta glucan solution that could offer optimal performance as a health ingredient.
According to the company, its spiral cone-like structrure maximises its ability to interact with receptor sites on immune cells — enhancing the nutraceutical's bioavailability and efficacy through its increased surface area.
Galacan is the first ingredient to be commercialised at Layn's new facility.
According to studies conducted by Layn, Galacan can offer:
- Gut health support: By encouraging the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, Galacan can support the microbiome
- Inflammatory respose regulation: Galacan can modulate the prevalence of pro-inflammatory cytokines — supporting metabolic health
- Blood sugar modulation: Animal model studies have found that Galacan boost the functioning of the pancreas' beta-cells, promoting healthy blood glucose levels
- Encouraging stamina: In vivo research has found that Galacan can stimulate ATP production, boosting energy and fighting fatigue
- Healthy ageing: Galacan has INCI certification, meaning it can be used in nutricosmetic and topical formulation that target skin health
- Tissue repair: Preclinical studies have suggested that Galacan can support wound healing and tissue repair, highlighting the ingredient's potential in cosmetic and dermatological applications
Layn is currently looking to obtain GRAS status for Galacan, as well as novel food certification — broadening its potential for use in dietary supplements, functional foods and more.
“The expansion through our biotechnology facility marks a new era for Layn Natural Ingredients, allowing us to push the boundaries of precision fermentation and enzyme production,” said James Roza, chief scientific officer at Layn Natural Ingredients.
“With Galacan, we are redefining Beta Glucan innovation, offering enhanced bioavailability and functional benefits for supplements, foods and beverages, as well as excellent applications in beauty, personal care and animal nutrition.”
