A full spectrum of botanical solutions for beauty-from-within applications

Published: 26-Jul-2024

Looking good is almost as important as feeling good … and the growing realisation that true beauty radiates from the inside is fuelling demand for natural ingestible solutions. Likewise, it’s becoming increasingly clear that using topical products alone is not enough

According to Markets and Markets research, the value of the global nutricosmetic supplement sector has surged by 57% since 2019, reaching an estimated value of $53.4 billion in 2022.

Likewise, the European nutricosmetics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.54% during the next 5 years.

This is based on a Mordor Intelligence report that describes nutricosmetics as nutraceuticals designed to enhance the health and appearance of skin, hair and nails by recognising the connection between overall well-being and beauty.1

Such products serve as natural agents to reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity by way of an inside out approach. The concept of “beauty-from-within” is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among ageing populations in developed regions.

More than skin deep

According to the same report, consumers favour products with natural, organic, vegan and non-GMO ingredients, prompting brands to focus on clean label formulations and transparency when ingredient sourcing.

Millennials, particularly women, are driving this demand as they focus on long-term beauty and health, with a preference for collagen-rich and natural antiageing supplements.

Innova Market Insights data indicates that 33% of consumers globally consider antiageing to be the most important functional skincare feature. This has led to a 5% global market growth in product launches featuring antiageing claims between 2019 and 2023.

Skin ageing is characterised by visible changes in structure, function and appearance with time, driven by intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Although the former — such as genetics, hormones and cellular metabolism — play an important role, extrinsic ones such as sun exposure, smoking and pollution also accelerate the ageing process.

Intrinsic factors such as genetics influence collagen production, skin elasticity and susceptibility to disease. Hormonal changes, especially during menopause, reduce collagen and elastin, leading to less firm and wrinkle-prone skin.

Slower cell turnover contributes to thinner and more fragile skin. Telomere shortening is another phenomenon of ageing, which leads to cellular senescence, a state in which cells permanently stop dividing; this reduces the skin’s ability to repair and regenerate.

Extrinsic factors include stressors such UV rays, which damage collagen and elastin; this causes wrinkles, sagging and dark spots. Pollution creates free radicals that damage skin cells, contributing to inflammation and collagen breakdown. Poor nutrition affects the skin's ability to repair and maintain itself.

The whole beauty package

Monteloeder, a subsidiary of SuanNutra, offers a portfolio of botanical formulations that have been customised to address various aspects of natural beauty-from-within.

eternalyoung is a breakthrough antiageing botanical composition that combines pomegranate (Punica granatum), sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), desert ginseng (Cistanche deserticola) and gotu kola (Centella asiatica).

Together, these ingredients work to promote better skin moisturisation, radiance and elasticity via their ability to synergistically target the underlying mechanisms of ageing.

The phenolic compounds native to the eternalyoung blend — namely punicalagins, flavones, phenylpropanoids and triterpenes — benefit skin owing to both antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties that modulate or reduce different cellular pathways involved in the skin ageing process.

Effective at a dosage of 225 mg/day and proven in extensive clinical studies, it targets both intrinsic and extrinsic ageing factors.

In a clinical 12-week randomised, double-blind placebo-controlled study involving 60 women, eternalyoung elicited significant improvements in wrinkle depth, elasticity, firmness, skin thickness, skin moisturisation, epidermal water loss and dark spot pigmentation, which were observed in less than 5 weeks.

The subjects on the botanical blend claimed that their skin felt more radiant, healthy and youthful. They also reported a reduction in stress and fatigue, suggesting its potential to promote overall well-being by addressing how people look and how they feel.

Telomeres and the fountain of youth

The four-extract blend is clinically endorsed to boost skin longevity and youthfulness — largely as a result of its role in slowing down telomere shortening rates.

Termed the origins of youth, telomeres are repetitive DNA base units that protect the ends of chromosomes and have been found to play a central role in longevity and skin rejuvenation.

By maintaining telomere length, eternalyoung prolongs cell lifespan and ageing cells are stimulated to act like young ones.

To the elevate the daily eternalyoung beauty regimen, the company has also successfully infused its signature beauty formula into a fruity pectin-based gummy. Two gummies provide the daily recommended dose.

“The skincare industry is evolving,” informs seasoned expert on health and wellness Karin Linnewiel Hermoni. “The multi-billion-dollar sector is shifting towards a more holistic approach, recognising the importance of combining topical treatments with ingestible solutions to nourish the skin from within for enduring results.”

“Companies are increasingly responding to demands for scientifically backed botanicals that not only demonstrate effectiveness but also prove their natural credentials. Monteloeder’s line of beauty-from-within compositions are all supported by several peer-reviewed studies, making them a leading force in the realm of high value nutricosmetics.”

Zeropollution is another creation by Monteloeder that’s tailored to provide all-round protection against environmental aggressors. Pollutants affect the skin on several levels; they can alter the skin barrier and skin microflora and increases oxidative stress.

Zeropollution is composed of a medley of botanical extracts that includes lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), olive (Olea europaea) and Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica). Zeropollution offers a multifaceted approach to combating pollution-related skin damage.

The botanical formula supports the skin’s defences against pollution from within. It reduces free radicals, prevents inflammation and preserves the skin barrier as demonstrated in an in vitro model.

Moreover, it has demonstrated abilities to inhibit the overactivation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), another biological pathway of the pollutant stress response that causes inflammation and skin damage.

In a clinical trial on 100 women volunteers living in polluted urban zones, supplementation with Zeropollution was linked to increased skin elasticity and firmness, strengthened skin barrier function and skin radiance.2 Antioxidant status measured was also improved.

Nutroxsun rounds out Monteloeder’s comprehensive line of beauty-from-within solutions by combining Mediterranean rosemary and grapefruit extracts that support healthy sun exposure for your skin.

Clinically effective at a dose of 100 mg per day, it serves as a complement to the use of topical sunscreens, improves skin texture and maintains youthful skin.

The phenolic compounds and diterpenes contained in the rosemary extract together with the flavonoids present in the grapefruit act on specific targets to deliver effective photoprotection.
