Brevel has successfully constructed its first industrial-scale fermentation facility for microalgae protein in the desert periphery of Israel.
Alongside the novel site, the company has secured two commercial agreements with food and beverage companies to utilise its services.
One company will be incorporating Brevel's microalgae proteins into its food products, while the other will be working alongside Brevel to create plant-based protein ingredients.
The facility is the first of Brevel's to showcase its technology at a commercial scale, and highlights the potential of large-scale, plant-based protein production.
According to Brevel, it has further plans to produce much larger production lines, with this new site serving as a proof-of-concept for partners who may consider investing into these facilities.
Brevel has a unique fermentation process as the microalgae it produces is consistently exposed to light in the process.
This means that the algae produces is nutrient-rich and in abundance, while also requiring no gene modification.
The plant's systems are currently undergoing test runs, and are scheduled to become fully operational in early 2025.
CEO and co-founder of Brevel, Yonatan Golan, commented: “Food tech companies are currently instrumental in innovating the protein space. In recent years, plant-based burgers brought this modality into the mainstream."
"Now is the time for the plant-based 2.0, which will be more nutritious and affordable for consumers. Our proprietary technology and know-how enable us to create a chlorella-based protein that delivers a full amino-acid profile, highly functional product and at cost parity. It also has a neutral flavour and colour, is highly sustainable and leaves a minimal environmental footprint.”
