Natural ingredients specialist BGG is expanding and optimising its astaxanthin manufacturing facilities in China.
Through this initiative, BGG plans to boost the production efficiency and sustainability of its facilities, ensuring it can cater to the growing interest in the antioxidant nutraceutical.
This follows the company's recent photobioreactor microalgae farm expansion, which was completed in May 2023 and put the company on the map as the largest astaxanthin producer in the world.
BGG will bring the entire value chain within a 20km footprint — incoroporating farming, extraction, drying, packaging, R&D and manufacturing in one easy-to-reach location.
The company's facility in the Yunnan Province will be the main target of the expansion; where the company will open a new laboratory dedicated to microalgae research and ingredient quality advancement.
By almost doubling its R&D team, BGG will also work closely with global research institutes to study tropical plants and fungi found throughout the region.
Through this investment, BGG will reduce the value chain by 100x, supporting faster tech transfer times and close collaboration between operations, manufacturing and R&D.
The move will also support cost efficiency and reductions to carbon footprint.
“We are proud to unveil our latest investment in our state-of-the-art microalgae platform, spanning the entire value chain," noted Mr Chunhua Li, Founder and Principal Shareholder of BGG.
"The enhanced synergy between manufacture and R&D will sharpen our innovation pipeline and accelerate speed to market.”
"This move will allow us to stay ahead of global shifts, ensuring uninterrupted service to our customers," added BGG World's CEO, Jürgen Nelis.
"By strengthening our supply chain on multiple fronts, we are building a future-ready business that can thrive alongside the evolving trade landscape."
BGG will be at Vitafoofs Europe 2025 at stand 4D236, where members of the team will be around to discuss the site expansion and tariff implications.
