Chemical producer BASF has announced that its Bemotrizinol (BEMT) ingredient, marketed under the BASF trademark Tinosorb S, has been approved for use in sunscreen in the US by the FDA.
The firm confirmed that it is now authorised to market and sell Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S) in the US in accordance with a Supplemental License Agreement with DSM Nutritional Products LLC.
Under this agreement, BASF has been granted co-exclusive rights to market and sell Bemotrizinol during the FDA's 18-month exclusivity period, including for use in sunscreen products manufactured in the US and/or imported into the US.
The news comes two months after the FDA first approved bemotrizinol as a new sunscreen active ingredient.
Tinosorb S is an advanced, oil-soluble chemical filter used in sunscreens to absorb both UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays.
It delivers broad-spectrum protection, does not leave a white residue, is highly stable in sunlight and has very low absorption through the skin.
BASF's sun care portfolio also contains several other UV filters, including the Tinosorb, Uvinul and Z COTE product families, as well as a broad range of formulation ingredients including emollients, emulsifiers, rheology modifiers, film formers and active ingredients.
The company said that it now looks forward to working with sunscreen manufacturers, brand owners and formulators across the US to bring "innovative sun protection solutions to market."
