SABEET was proven to be tolerable and safe in an older adult population, while also exhibiting a trend towards improved insulin sensitivity

Sabinsa, a global nutraceutical and cosmeceutical provider, has published the results of a preliminary study demonstrating the safety and health benefits of its beetroot extract, SABEET.

The study, conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeirom has now been published in Nutrients.

It aimed to determine the tolerability and safety profile of the standardised beetroot extract, while also examining if the functional ingredient had any health benefits in older adults aged 60 or above.

The randomised, placebo-controlled trial involved the daily administration of SABEET for a 12-week period, with the treatment cohort receiving 20g of SABEET per day.

Key parameters including anthropometric, biochemical and haemodynamic measures were taken to assess the safety and tolerability of supplementation with SABEET.

Sabeet proves tolerable and efficacious

The results of the study determined that supplementing with beetroot extract was well tolerated in the older population, with no serious side effects reported.

There was also a significant increase in plasma nitrate levels and a trend of improve in insulin sensitivity in those who were given the extract, pointing towards the extract’s potential capabilities in managing the metabolism.

“This preliminary study was conducted to underscore the safety and tolerability of SABEET, but we are pleased to see the benefits it indicated as well,” concluded Shaheen Majeed, Global CEO & Managing Director of The Sami-Sabinsa Group

“Sabinsa extends its gratitude to the team in Food and Nutrition Institute at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for their collaboration in this study, and we look forward to continuing collaboration.”
