Using its Xtend Modified Atmosphere and Modified Humidity bulk packaging films, StePacPPC adapted its technology to meet the specific postharvest needs of pitaya.
The solution enables the fruit to arrive in distant markets in peak condition, retaining its vibrant colour, firmness and visual appeal.

Native to Central and South America, pitaya is prized for its striking appearance, sweet tropical flavour and health benefits.
However, its high respiration rate, sensitivity to moisture loss and vulnerability to microbial decay make it particularly challenging to ship by sea.
Journeys of 3 weeks or more can lead to shrivelling, dull skin colour, wilting bracts and reduced market value.
“Even under optimal cold chain conditions, long sea freight takes its toll on pitaya,” says Gary Ward, PhD, CTO at StePacPPC. “Weight loss, dehydration and occasional decay significantly affect quality and freshness by the time the fruit reaches its destination.”
The new packaging solution carefully balances oxygen and carbon dioxide levels while managing moisture inside the pack.
This slows respiration, reduces dehydration and suppresses microbial growth, helping to preserve both eating quality and appearance. Maintaining firm, outward-facing bracts is particularly important, as these are a key visual indicator of freshness.
StePacPPC’s global R&D team fine-tuned the film structure, atmosphere and moisture control to optimise performance throughout storage and transport.
StePacPPC’s technology is based on modified atmosphere packaging principles that slow ageing processes and inhibit ethylene activity.
A wide range of film structures with antifog properties and tailored water vapour transmission rates allows precise moisture management for different fruit types, extending shelf life well beyond that achieved with conventional packaging.
“This breakthrough opens new opportunities for exporters to reach distant markets with confidence,” adds Ward.
“It reflects how we work closely with customers to solve real postharvest challenges and unlock new markets.”
The pitaya solution builds on StePacPPC’s growing portfolio of packaging for tropical fruits, including bananas, passion fruit, mango, papaya and lychee, reinforcing its position at the forefront of fresh produce packaging innovation.
