Looking beyond the headlines, NBR finds out how Solabia Nutrition's Bonolive can benefit women's health post-menopause, while also enhancing skin smoothness and reducing the presence of visible pores

New clinical studies have highlighted Bonolive's potential as comprehensive women's health ingredient, as it can assist in mitigating menopausal symptoms and supporting beauty from within.

Bonolive is a standardised olive leaf extract that contains high levels of the functional ingredient oleuropein, with multiple studies suggesting its role in supporting various aspects of postmenopausal health, including bone density, cholesterol management and the mitigation of hot flashes, sleep issues and fatigue.

Furthermore, currently unpublished research has pointed towards the benefits of the olive polyphenol in beauty from within applications, which was previously unknown.

According to Billie Icheva, Marketing and Communications Manager at Solabia Nutrition, "Preliminary data suggests that the nutraceutical can improve skin elasticity and smoothness, while also reducing the presence of deep and visible pores."

These findings spotlight the potential of olive polyphenols in supporting women's wellness in a range of applications, including bone and skin health, as well as menopausal symptom management.

250mg of Bonolive ... promoted skin smoothness and reduced the number of visible pores

Bonolive's beauty from within benefits

Consumers have always been interested in looking good, with topical creams, tinctures and serums continuing to remain extremely popular in the anti-ageing cosmetics market.

However, the recent beauty from within trend has taken both the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries by storm, as individuals look for new and effective ways to promote skin health.

With the beauty from within trend continuing to shape the nutraceutical industry, Solabia Nutrition ran a 12 week study involving 64 women to see if daily supplementation with Bonolive could promote anti-ageing effects on the skin.

"We have preliminary data from testing with Bonolive," Billie continues, "that suggests its potential as a nutricosmetic for promoting skin health. 250mg of Bonolive was found to have a protective effect on the skin — promoting smoothness and reducing a user's number of visible pores."

According to Solabia Nutrition, this study will be published next year.

Promoting postmenopausal health with Bonolive

In a six week collaborative study conducted by the department of Human Biology and Nutrition at Maastricht University and Solabia's nutritional scientists, researchers found that daily Bonolive intake could significantly enhance the quality of life of menopausal women.

This included improvements in vasomotor symptoms, as well as psychological, physical and sexual parameters.

As well as enhancing a user's quality of life, Bonolive was found to notably reduce triglyceride levels, while also boosting the prevalence of high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

Bonolive also showed potential in increasing bone mineral density, which suggests the ingredient's benefits in promoting bone health.

These findings highlight the potential of the nutraceutical as an all-encompassing, hormone-free ingredient for menopausal women.

Supporting women's health

Until recently, women were not included in clinical trials owing to the complexity of the female hormonal system, and how it might impact an ingredient's efficacy.

Therefore, there is significantly less research into women's health and what works to alleviate common ailments faced by this demographic.

Therefore, Solabia wanted to change this by developing Bonolive, states Billie: "Women's health has been a huge trend this year, and it will likely dominate the field again in 2025. Therefore, we created Bonolive to allow women to access a 100% plant-based, non-hormonal ingredient that can help to support menopausal women in a safe and effective way."

"We also wanted to gather clinical data on Bonolive's potential in this area, as consumers want access to proven and clean-label ingredients. The results of these studies highlight our olive leaf extract's potential in a wide range of women's health areas, and we will continue to explore the activity of our nutraceutical going forward." Billie concludes.
