OraCMU oral probiotic gains Health Canada approval

Stratum Nutrition is expanding its clinically researched oral probiotic ingredient OraCMU into Canada after securing a Health Canada product licence

Stratum Nutrition has announced the expansion of its oral microbiome portfolio into Canada after receiving Health Canada approval for OraCMU, a probiotic ingredient developed by Oraticx and based on the strain Weissella cibaria CMU.

The Health Canada Product Licence authorises OraCMU powder as a natural health product to help support and maintain oral health, promote a healthy oral microbiota and help reduce halitosis by supporting a healthy oral microbiota.

The approval opens the Canadian natural health product market to Stratum Nutrition’s ingredient, giving nutraceutical and oral health brands a new option for developing microbiome-focused formulations.

In contrast with conventional probiotic products that primarily target digestive health, OraCMU has been developed specifically for the oral microbiome.

The ingredient is positioned to support a balanced microbial ecosystem in the mouth while addressing factors associated with bad breath.

The Canadian expansion comes as interest in the oral microbiome grows within the nutraceutical and functional health sectors, with research increasingly exploring the relationship between microbial communities in the mouth and oral health outcomes.

This is driving interest in probiotics and other microbiome-targeted approaches beyond the traditional gut health category.

Arun Nair, Chief Commercial Officer at Stratum Nutrition, said the Health Canada approval would create opportunities for partners to bring oral health solutions to Canadian consumers.

As consumer interest in microbiome-focused wellness continues to accelerate, OraCMU provides brands with a clinically studied ingredient that promotes oral health by helping maintain a balanced oral microbiome.

The company said the approval also strengthens OraCMU’s international regulatory position and supports its strategy of supplying clinically researched ingredients to brands developing evidence-led oral health and microbiome products.
