Lycored's Lumenato to be deemed a Novel Food by the EFSA

The carotenoid-rich nutraceutical has been proven to support skin health by protecting it from UV exposure and collagen degradation

Lycored's yellow tomato-based nutricosmetic ingredient, Lumenato, has been deemed safe by the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens.

Soon to be added to the EU Novel Food list, the carotenoid-rich ingredient can be incorporated into supplement and functional food products at a dose of 100mg — which is 1.1% of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for lycopene determined by the EFSA.1

Standardised to key bioactives phytoene and phytofluene, Lumenato has been clinically proven to reduce collagen breakdown, enhance skin elasticity and protect against UVB rays, highlighting the ingredient's multi-pronged approach to skin health.2,3

The nutricosmetic ingredient has also been shown to influence ceramides for improved skin barrier function, as well as skin firmness and elasticity.

The EFSA's scientific opinion was recently published in the EFSA Journal, affirming the safety of Lumenato as a novel food and opening the door for European formulators to use the ingredient in their supplement products once the EU Novel Food list has been updated.

Lumenato is available to supplement manufacturers at varying concentrations in powder, extract and liquid emulsion delivery formats, allowing the creation of both nutricosmetics and derm-level products.

"With this decision, Lumenato is now poised for broad acceptance across the EU, Switzerland, US, Canada, Australia, Korea, India and other countries for use in a variety of supplement products," noted Christiane Lippert, Global Product Manager, Beauty from Within Portfolio.

"Lumenato can help consumers achieve skin radiance and glow from the inside out, and this approval will help Lycored to meet the growing demand for natural, clean-label beauty from within products," she concluded.
