Lonza drives nutraceutical sustainability with new dedicated centre

Lonza's Center of Applied Sustainability will develop carbon footprint reduction strategies and find ways to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and optimise resource usage

Lonza's Capsule & Health Division has inaugurated its new Center of Applied Sustainability.

With a strong team of sustainability experts working at the site, the Center will be responsible for progressing Lonza's sustainability strategy — focusing primarily in reducing the company's carbon footprint.

The team at the Center will be responsible for implementing solutions in line with Lonza's current SBTi-validated near-term emissions reduction targets.

They will also focus on improving energy efficiency, reducing production-associated waste and optimising resource usage.

The Center of Applied Sustainability will provide customers keen to reduce their emissions with end-to-end support — with experts on hand to focus on upstream supply chain emissions, all the way through to creating products with a low environmental impact.

A core service of the Center will be to conduct carbon footprint assessments for customers' capsule and health ingredient products, allowing them to identify opportunities to reduce emissions and improve process sustainability.

“As environmental concerns in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries continue to grow, developers and manufacturers face increased pressure to reduce environmental impact, particularly in final dosage forms," explained Christine Lebeault, Head of Applied Sustainability at Lonza Capsules & Health Ingredients.

"We believe that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand, strengthening competitive advantage and contributing to a more sustainable future."

According to Christine, the novel Center of Applied Sustainability will allow customers to consider sustainability in the early stages of product development. "By co-innovating with our customers to help them responsibly source, manufacture and innovate, we can help them meet their environmental goals and support tomorrow's world," she concluded.
