A study has found that Kemin's sleep-focused spearmint and green tea nootropic nutraceutical, DailyZz, can offer users post-sleep cognitive benefits.
The trial, which was conducted through the Sleep and Health Research Programme at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, found that the botanical blend could improve several aspects of cognition, includng mental speed, focus, working memory and decision making.
The blend contains the polyphenols rosmarinic acid and epigallocatechin gallate, which have been previously shown to improve sleep parameters in a range of clinical studies.
However, according to Kemin, DailyZz is the first natural sleep nootropic that has been scientifically proven to benefit users post-sleep.
Looking at benefits beyond sleep
Sleep is crucial to overall health, as well as quality of life, with insufficient sleep influencing our daytime alertness and performance, as well as our mental and physical health.
With nearly one in three adults in the US not geting enough sleep, and a study from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine revealing that 65% of Americans believe that sleep contributes significantly to next day effectiveness, there is a clear need to develop effective solutions that can help consumers to catch some proper Zs.
A great way to support sleep is through the use of supplements, with nutraceuticals like melotonin and valerian root being particularly popular in this category.
However, both these ingredients have been linked to next-day side effects, including feelings of drowsiness and grogginess.
Therefore Kemin created DailyZz to function as a sleep ingredient that could function without the side effects often associated with other natural alternatives.
DailyZz improves next-day cognition
During the study, 89 participants aged between 22 and 55 were given 485mg of DailyZz 30 minutes before bed for a month.
Researchers then gave each participant a sleep diary and activity tracker to complete, which assessed any changes observed during the study period.
Each volunteer's mood and neurocognitive functioning were also measured.
After 30 days of supplementation, the polyphenol blend improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia symptoms, while also boosting neurocognitive functioning.
This included significant improvements in mental speed, accuracy, concentration and judgement, as well as a five-fold increase in focus.
Participants also experienced a 60% improvement in working memory, suggesting the ingredient can effectively support cognition as well as sleep.
