As a growing body of research reveals the microbiome’s influence in almost all aspects of health, the gut has been at the forefront of the wellness movement for a while now. With studies suggesting that the microflora dwelling in our gastrointestinal tracts can influence everything from cognition to respiratory health, immunity, mood and muscular wellness, it’s crucial that consumers can support the “good” bacteria that shape our day-to-day well-being.

Probiotics are a great way to naturally boost the diversity of the gut microbiome and many companies in the nutraceutical space are looking into how key genera such as Akkermansia, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria can impact specific health parameters. As the industry explores the potential of thousands of strains, it seems that certain probiotic blends can impact health in different ways — working behind the scenes to alter signalling pathways and modulate cellular processes.
