The Israeli food-tech start-up has received GRAS confirmation for its animal-free protein, paving the way for scaling-up for mass market adoption

Israel food-tech start-up Imagindairy has announced its animal-free dairy protein has been confirmed as Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS).

Following significant internal and external review and safety testing, the novel ingredient met with accordance the requirements outlined by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Speaking about the regulatory milestone, said Eyal Afergan, co-founder & CEO at Imagindairy, said: “This gives us the necessary validation to work with food and beverage companies in the US to develop animal-free versions of beloved dairy products, and marks a substantial stride toward achieving our larger mission of scaling up for mass-market adoption.”

The company combines its proprietary AI platform with the science of precision fermentation to produce large-scale production at a reasonable cost. This follows Imagindairy’s collaboration earlier this year with Food Fermentation Europe, a union championing precision fermentation.

Imagindairy is an Israeli-based food tech start-up with a strategy to reinvigorate the dairy industry by producing sustainable, animal-free dairy proteins that have the same bold flavour, functionality, mouthfeel and nutritional properties as those from bovine sources.

Elsewhere, the company has opened its new headquarters in Haifa, Israel - a bespoke space built to support Imagindairy’s next phase, with research labs and a test kitchen for culinary and ingredient applications testing.
