Health Canada recognises Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan

Regulatory update supports the development and licensing of fermentation-derived health ingredients in Canada

Lallemand Bio-Ingredients welcomes recent updates to Health Canada's Natural Health Product monographs recognising Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of trans-resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan. This regulatory development reinforces the growing recognition of fermentation-derived ingredients and highlights the potential of yeast biotechnology to deliver innovative, science-backed solutions for human health. The monograph updates also provide manufacturers with a clearer, more predictable and more efficient pathway to license eligible natural health products containing fermentation-derived trans-resveratrol or yeast beta-glucan in Canada.

For trans-resveratrol, the monograph update allows fermentation-derived trans-resveratrol from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to be licensed under Health Canada's existing Antioxidant Monograph framework, including established antioxidant claims and conditions of use.

In addition to recognising Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of yeast beta-glucan, the updated monograph includes allowed health claims when used at the recommended dose:

  • Source of yeast beta-glucans with immunomodulating properties
  • Helps reduce the severity of symptoms of the common cold (e.g. sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, cough, runny nose) in adults prone to recurrent colds when taken as a preventative measure during winter months

The updated monograph provides a clear regulatory framework that supports the development, licensing, and commercialisation of yeast beta-glucan products in Canada.

As a global leader in yeast and fermentation technologies, Lallemand Bio-Ingredients has long invested in the research, development, and production of ingredients derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This recognition reflects the increasing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of yeast-derived bioactives and their role in addressing evolving consumer health needs.

"Fermentation has been safely used for centuries, and today it continues to unlock exciting opportunities for innovation in nutrition and health," said Nassim Naderi, Regulatory Affairs Specialist for Lallemand Bio-Ingredients. "Health Canada's recognition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of both resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan underscores the credibility of fermentation-derived ingredients and supports continued innovation across the natural health products sector."

Lallemand Bio-Ingredients' portfolio includes scientifically substantiated ingredients derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, such as Veri-teTM fermentation-derived trans-resveratrol and M-Gard® highly purified yeast beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, which reflect the company's commitment to evidence-based nutritional solutions and align with growing demand for healthy ageing, immune resilience, and overall wellness by combining scientific rigour, sustainability, consistent quality, and the regulatory confidence needed to develop innovative natural health products for the Canadian market.

"This development represents an important step forward not only for fermentation-derived ingredients, but for the broader health and wellness industry," added Ms. Naderi. "We are proud to contribute to the scientific advancement of yeast-based ingredients and look forward to continuing our mission of delivering innovative solutions backed by science."
