Ginger extract Gingeren supports menstrual comfort and daily life from the first cycle

Randomised, placebo-controlled trial finds Gingeren, Ennature Biopharma's long-acting ginger extract, supported menstrual comfort from cycle one and improved working ability by 74% versus placebo

Ennature Biopharma has announced the first clinical study publication on Gingeren™, its long-acting, standardised ginger extract, in the peer-reviewed journal Cureus (Springer Nature). The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that Gingeren™ supported broad menstrual comfort and daily functioning in women with primary dysmenorrhoea, with significant benefits versus placebo from the first cycle.

The paper, titled “Efficacy of a Standardized Ginger Extract for Menstrual Pain and Associated Symptoms in Women with Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial,” was published on 21 August 2026 in Cureus, Volume 18, Issue 8, e114903 (DOI: 10.7759/cureus.114903).

Primary dysmenorrhoea, painful menstruation without an underlying pelvic condition, affects an estimated 73% of menstruating women worldwide. Beyond cramps, it often brings back pain, fatigue, headache and mood changes that disrupt work, study and daily life, and many women seek non-hormonal options.

The multicentre trial in India enrolled 96 healthy women aged 20–30 with primary dysmenorrhoea. Participants took Gingeren™ (100 mg capsules standardised to NLT 20% total gingerols) or placebo twice daily for 90 days, covering three menstrual cycles.

By the third cycle, compared with placebo, Gingeren™:

  • Reduced dysmenorrhoea severity by 68%, measured by the WaLIDD score, which combines working ability, pain location, intensity and days of pain
  • Improved working ability by 74%
  • Reduced pain intensity by 34%, measured on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)
  • Reduced prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels by 17%

Benefits were significant from the first cycle and extended well beyond pain. In cycle one, overall menstrual distress scores (MEDI-Q), covering physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms, were 91% lower than placebo. Menstrual fluid volume also fell by 32% from baseline, while it rose in the placebo group.

Lower PGF2α, a key driver of uterine contractions, points to a mechanism behind the results, while stable oestradiol levels confirmed a non-hormonal profile. Gingeren™ was well tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported.

“Period discomfort isn't just about one bad day. It affects how women work, study and live, month after month. Seeing Gingeren™ make a real difference from the very first cycle is hugely encouraging. Together with Aspargize™ for menopause, it reflects our promise to support women at every stage of life, from menstruation to menopause, and that will never change,” said Pragya Bhartia Barwale, Managing Director, Ennature Biopharma.
