The Australian biotech Marinova has announced that more than 5000 research papers have been published on the marine extract fucoidan.
Fucoidan is a complex sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds such as Undaria pinnatifida (wakame) and Laminaria japonica (kombu)
Interest in the ingredient has surged in recent years, driven by rising consumer demand for natural health products.
Fucoidan has also been shown to modulate inflammatory signalling pathways and play a role in apoptosis and autophagy, drawing interest from longevity and healthy-ageing sectors.
It has also been linked to the regulation of glucose and cholesterol metabolism.
In 2025 alone, more than 550 papers were published on the ingredient, with 2026 set to break that record.
Talking about the momentum behind the ingredient, Marinova’s Research Director, Dr Barbara Wimmer, said: “Fucoidans have been shown to impart a wide range of beneficial bioactivities."
High-purity, certified organic fucoidans are multifunctional ingredients that have been extensively studied. They are included in innovative nutraceutical, medical device and skincare applications for their gut health, immune support and healthy ageing properties.
Dr Wimmer highlighted the growing body of research supporting the gut and digestive health benefits of high-purity fucoidans.
These benefits include balancing the gut microbiome, fuelling the production of short-chain fatty acids and supporting gut integrity.
"In addition, Marinova’s high-purity Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan has recently been scientifically validated as a prebiotic.”
The firm is positioning its sustainably sourced, clinically validated fucoidan ingredient for brands looking to meet growing consumer demand for natural products.
Marinova added that its Maritech organic fucoidans are the world's only high-purity, certified organic fucoidan extracts with global regulatory acceptance, including FDA-notified GRAS and EU Novel Foods authorisation.
“Marinova remains a leading contributor to global fucoidan research, recently publishing the world’s first clinical trial investigating high-purity fucoidan and prostate health,” added Dr Wimmer.
Based on the significant relief of lower urinary tract symptoms and improved prostate-related quality of life, we expect fucoidan to have a bright future in men’s urinary health.
The company will be showcasing its fucoidan ingredient at SupplySide Global (booth 4136) and the IO Summit Buyer’s Market (booth 409) in October.
