FrieslandCampina Ingredients' infant whey protein attains EU approval

The company's hydrolysed whey protein enhances the nutritional value of infant formulas, while adhering to the new, more stringent EU standards

FrieslandCampina Ingredients' whey protein hydrosylate has been cleared for use across the European Union.

Hyvital Whey HA 300, which is specifically designed for infant and follow-on formulas, can now be incorporated into baby food products and milks.

The EU approval makes Hyvital Whey HA 300 one of only a few milk hydrosylate ingredients to be approved for use in infant formulations.

Protein hydrosylates are acquired through the breakdown of milk proteins via enzymes, which allow infant formula manufacturers to enhance the nutritional value of their products.

In Februrary 2022, the EU tightened its regulations on protein hydrosylates — specifically when incorporated into infant nutritional items.

Following this, FrieslandCampina overcame novel safety and suitability evaluations to ensure the product stayed on the European market.

Marketing Director of Early Life Nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, Jouke Veldman, commented: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Hyvital Whey HA 300 has received this approval. This decision not only broadens the options available for developing formulas for infants, but also reinforces our commitment to meeting the highest industry standards."

"I would like to extend my gratitude to our dedicated R&D teams in Ingredients, Global Nutrition and Scientific & Regulatory Affairs. Their hard work and expertise were instrumental in securing this approval and achieving this important milestone. Our customers can trust that we continue to prioritise safety, quality and innovation.”

The inclusion of Hyvital Whey HA 300 into EU legislation solidifies FrieslandCampina Ingredients' position in the early life nutrition market.
