FrieslandCampina's Biotis Fermentis bags 16 new health claims in Australia, NZ

Published: 3-Apr-2025

When marketing the nutraceutical in Australia and New Zealand, brands can now use a range of claims centring around gut health, muscular recovery and athletic performance

Protein and prebiotic specialist FrieslandCampina Ingredients has received 16 new health claim approvals from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).

This follows the approval of its Aequival 2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) ingredient for infant formula in the region.

The company's recent health claim approvals include 12 centring around the efficacy of its Biotis Fermentis ingredient, which is designed to offer active nutrition and gut health benefits.

Biotis GOS, the galactooligosaccharide component of Biotis Fermentis, may also support iron and calcium absorption in both adults and children.

Biotis Fermentis is a nutraceutical comprised of a synergistic combination of whey protein, prebiotic galactooligosaccharides and probiotic cultures, which has been fermented to create a formulation that supports athletic/active performance and overall health.

Through approvals from the FSANZ, products formulated with Biotis Fermentis can be advertised to:

  • Support gut health
  • Support the gut-muscle axis
  • Improve muscle recovery
  • Support athletic performance

By leveraging these claims, FrieslandCampina notes that brands can create unique products within the increasingly competitive sports nutrition sector.

According to the company, targeting the gut microbiome is a promising strategy to improve sports performance, as exercise, stress and certain dietary habits associated with competitive sports can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

By mitigaing this common phenomenon — which 86% of athletes claim to experience — nutraceutical companies can help athletes and active consumers alike stay on their A-game.

“Sport plays a vital role in the cultural identity of Australia and New Zealand, with over one-third of Australian consumers regularly participating in fitness or gym activities,” commented Vicky Davies, Global Marketing Director, Performance, Active and Medical Nutrition.

“These FSANZ-approved health claims are an important milestone, enabling sports and active nutrition brands to stand out by highlighting the gut health and performance benefits of Biotis Fermentis – ultimately helping active consumers and athletes alike feel at their best.”

“The FSANZ approval of our Biotis GOS and Vivinal GOS mineral absorption claims will help brands tap into the health-conscious consumers' growing demand for functional foods and supplements with clear and credible health claims," concluded Tjalling Bekker, Regional Director APAC, FrieslandCampina Ingredients.
