Akay Bioactives drives sustainable transformation in botanical ingredients

As global demand for clean-label, plant-based solutions continues to rise, Akay Bioactives is taking bold steps to ensure its operations benefit both people and the planet. With a broad portfolio of clinically substantiated and specialty botanical ingredients, Akay Bioactives is advancing a comprehensive sustainability strategy that goes far beyond basic compliance.

At the heart of this strategy is regenerative agriculture—a farming model focused on restoring soil health, increasing biodiversity, and reducing water usage while minimising synthetic inputs. Akay Bioactives works directly with contract farmers across India and Cambodia through its vertically integrated network, supporting local communities while ensuring consistent, high-quality crop yields. The company also uses geo-tagged farm plots to monitor crop activity in real time, delivering unprecedented traceability leveraging the Trace AgTech platform.

Akay Bioactives’ commitment to a greener tomorrow also extends to its manufacturing practices. The company has invested heavily in clean, full-spectrum extraction technologies, effectively preserving and concentrating bioactive compounds from nutraceutical botanicals. This process reduces water consumption and waste generation.

In line with growing consumer demand for transparency, Akay Bioactives is expanding traceability and farm-level documentation efforts across its supply chain.  Leveraging the Trace AgTech software and mobile apps in partnership with contract farmers, marquis offerings like curcumin and chili are traceable from seed to shelf, supported by real-time data systems that ensure authenticity, quality, and accountability at every stage of cultivation and harvest.

As part of the Oterra Group’s climate action strategy, Akay Bioactives is aligned with science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the most recognised organisation globally for developing methods and criteria for effective corporate climate action. By 2030, targets include:

  • 42% reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 (direct and energy-related emissions)
  • 25% reduction in Scope 3 (value-chain emissions)

Initiaves to support these targets include energy efficiency upgrades at processing facilities, adoption of 100% renewable electricity, and optimised logistics to lower carbon footprints. These goals reflect our commitment to reducing emissions across our operations and value chain while supporting global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Through its integrated approach to sourcing, processing, and continuous innovation, Akay Bioactives is setting a strong example for how the botanical ingredients industry can evolve—responsibly delivering high-performance plant-based solutions with a commitment environmental stewardship and human health.
