Cranberry extract comes out on top for preventing UTIs in novel study

The study found that cranberry extract was significantly better at preventing UTIs than D-mannose

Solv Wellness, a nutraceutical company focused on woman’s health, has released the results of a study suggesting that its cranberry extract can benefit those that suffer with UTIs more than D-mannose.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are generally triggered by the adherence of bacteria to the walls of the urinary tract, so if this can be prevented, the risk of developing such an infection is dramatically decreased.

Comparing cranberry extracts and D-mannose for UTI prevention

In this study — which is published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements — participants were either given Ellura, a 36mg proanthocyanidin standardised cranberry juice-based dietary supplement or D-mannose.

The study was conducted over a one-week period, and participants’ urine samples were collected throughout the trial period.

Urines were tested for bacterial anti-adhesion activity against P-type and Type 1 Escherichia coli, which are the two most common UTI-causing bacteria.

The results

From the one week trial period, results demonstrated that Ellura could effectively and consistently prevent the adhesion of both analogues of E. coli, but D-mannose’s anti-adhesion activity was inconsistent and limited.

This trend was particularly seen against P-type E. coli, which has often been found to cause serious kidney infections.

Researchers also hypothesised that the anti-adhesion activity seen in those who took D-mannose was not down to the supplement, but to an adhesion inhibitor the body naturally produces called Tamm-Horsfall protein.

These results cast doubt on the benefits of taking D-mannose for the maintenance of urinary tract health.

While supplementation with cranberry extracts and D-mannose are both commonly associated with UTI prevention, this study highlights the effectiveness of cranberry ingredients in reducing the risk of UTIs.

CEO of Solv Wellness, Teri Wade said: "Ellura's consistent performance against UTI-causing bacteria proves its unmatched efficacy.
