How nutraceuticals can help prevent age-related bone degeneration: a review

Published: 4-Sep-2024

The review focuses on the nutraceuticals with potential to reduce the bone degradation seen in osteoporosis

A novel review has highlighted the potential of nutraceuticals in the prevention of osteoporosis.

The investigative piece, which has been provisionally published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, depicts the role of botanicals and natural functional ingredients in promoting healthy bones and reducing the impact of their degeneration.1

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease, and can cause a significant reduction in the quality of life of patients who have it.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation has estimated that one in three women and one in five men aged over 50 are affected by the bone condition globally, highlighting the need for comprehensive and practical treatment options for those suffering with it.2

The lead author of this review, Livia Roseti — a Senior Researcher at the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli — and her five colleagues discuss the role of nutraceuticals in slowing down the progression of pathological bone loss.

They will also explore the pros and cons of the natural solutions which have shown efficacy in clinical trials, as well as looking into how nutraceutical industry professionals can work with healthcare professionals to better advise the public on the optimal nutritional strategies for bone health.

The full version of the review will be available to view in the upcoming weeks.
