Omega-3’s role in wellness has long been acknowledged by the nutraceutical industry, with research advocating its benefits in a wide range of health areas. Recently, there has been a growing focus on the role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in healthy ageing as studies highlight its crucial role in the prevention of age-related decline. An older individual may experience health issues during the latter portion of their life for a variety of reasons; a common factor that often causes or exacerbates these events is chronic low-grade inflammation.
Inflammation is a significant contributor to “unhealthy” ageing and its long-term, systemic presence can both reduce an individual’s quality of life and reduce their resilience to illness and injury. Therefore, addressing this element of health can be a great way for consumers to stave off the negative impacts of ageing while also looking and feeling great.
As older individuals are more susceptible to inflammation — while also being more prone to malnutrition — supplementing with anti-inflammatory nutraceuticals such as omega-3 can be highly beneficial for those in this consumer subset.1,2 With 19% of the UK population now older than 65, it’s more important than ever to ensure that consumers are educated about the benefits of omega-3 supplementation and how it can help them to stay disease-free for longer.
