US botanical ingredient expert building towards using extract in next sport nutrition product

Results of a new study have demonstrated that Trigonella foenum-graecum, Gencor’s extract of fenugreek known as Testofen, increases strength, aerobic endurance and lean body mass in healthy, exercising men.

Based on the results, the company is looking forward to incorporating Testofen into its next sports nutrition product.

Both fenugreek's leaves and seeds are used for health benefits, associated with increased levels of free testosterone and associated anabolic effects. However, this study aimed to examine changes in lean body mass, fat mass, upper and lower body muscular strength and endurance in response to an eight-week resistance training programme, with and without daily supplementation of the extract.

The eight-week, double-blind, randomised, dose-response, clinical trial was conducted at RDC Global with 138 healthy, non-smoking male participants.

The findings suggested that Testofen is both effective and acts in a dose-response manner. It concluded that Testofen at a 600 mg per day dose, in conjunction with an effective exercise regime, has superior positive effects in leg strength, aerobic capacity and body composition compared with placebo and a 300 mg per day dose.
