Kemin Industries has presented emerging preclinical data at the 2023 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in April.
During the annual meeting, Dr Rosario Amato, post-doctoral research fellow from the University of Pisa in Italy and Kemin’s research partner for the study, shared novel data on the efficacy of oral intake of Neumentix in preserving the activity and viability of retinal ganglion cells, as well as Neumentix’s associated mechanisms of action in a rat model of hypertensive glaucoma.
“The research substantiates the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in driving neurodegeneration in retinal ganglion cells, but also demonstrates the potential to counteract these drivers with nutritional strategies,” said University of Pisa professor Massimo Dal Monte, the principal investigator of the study.
“Our findings emphasised the intraocular pressure-independent antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of Neumentix,” said Dr Amato.
The study findings validated Neumentix’s expanded mechanisms of action that are effective for neural tissues beyond the brain. Results also indicated that Neumentix, Kemin’s natural spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) extract, sourced from patented plants and characterised by its phenolic complex, works to counteract common degenerative pathways in the eyes and brain.

“It was an honour to share Kemin’s latest scientific findings on a nutritional intervention in eye health, specifically in a rat model of hypertensive glaucoma,” said Samanta Maci, Senior Commercial and Technical Manager, Kemin Human Nutrition and Health. “The data presented at ARVO sheds light on how oral supplementation with our patented ingredient Neumentix has the ability to protect retinal ganglion cells’ viability and function through improving neural trophism, reducing oxidative stress.”
Neumentix provides both cognitive and physical performance benefits and can be formulated into a variety of applications. Science shows that Neumentix may serve as nutritional support for neural tissues with its six suggested mechanisms of action relevant for both the eyes and brain.
“The eye and brain are two of a kind,” said Maci. “The eye—specifically the retina—is an extension of the brain. They are connected through neurons that transmit information and, together, are key to vision. Both the eye and brain are sensitive to the same types of insults and share common degenerative mechanisms. Our latest data shows that Neumentix is the right ingredient to innovate with when addressing neural health.”
