Gutology raises £1.8m for microbiome-first oral health

The brand behind the bestselling Oral Biome+ toothpaste is looking to expand into the US and German markets, as well as continue research and development into postbiotic and synbiotic oral care

The UK-based microbiome-first consumer health brand Gutology has reportedly raised £1.8m in new funding to accelerate product development across oral care and synbiotic formulations.

The investment has come from Active Partners, the consumer-focused investment firm behind brands including Huel, Honest Burgers and Rapha, alongside the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II through fund manager Mercia Ventures and existing angel investors.

Gutology's flagship product is the Oral Biome+ toothpaste, which ranks in the top 10 toothpaste products on Amazon UK and holds the number one toothpaste sales position at Planet Organic.

The company has served more than 100,000 customers to date.

Founded by Ollie Gallant, Gutology has grown from a hit podcast into a fast-scaling direct-to-consumer oral care brand, built on the principle that oral care products should support, rather than disrupt, the oral microbiome.

The company’s product portfolio centres on consumable, daily-use oral care, with formulations combining functionalised hydroxyapatite and Truebiotic technology, designed to work with the oral microbiome.

Alongside its product growth, Gutology has built a sizeable, highly engaged audience through education-led content and a leading health podcast, positioning oral health within a broader conversation about everyday health, rather than a purely cosmetic category.

The investment will support the following:

  • Expansion into the US and German markets
  • Growth of UK and international retail partnerships
  • Increased clinical research and product development in postbiotic and synbiotic oral care
  • Development of the next generation of synbiotic consumable products.

Looking ahead, Gutology sees longer-term potential for microbiome-informed innovation beyond oral care, as consumer categories increasingly move away from antibacterial approaches towards products designed to work with beneficial bacteria in everyday routines.

Ollie Gallant, founder of Gutology, said: "For decades, oral care has largely worked against the oral microbiome. Toothpaste is one of the most consistent daily habits people have, making it a compelling starting point."

"This funding enables us to accelerate innovation in postbiotic and synbiotic oral care while building products that deliver performance and integrate seamlessly into daily routines."

Anna Sweetman, Active Partners: “Gutology is meeting a clear and fast-growing consumer demand for more evidence-based, microbiome-friendly personal care products."

"Starting in oral care, the team has built impressive early traction with products that balance scientific rigour and 5-star consumer feedback."

"We believe Gutology is well-positioned to lead the shift towards personal care products designed to better align with the microbiome, from what we use on our bodies to what we bring into our homes and we’re excited to support the company as it enters its next phase of growth."

During the next 12 months, Gutology plans to expand its team across product development, brand and operations, alongside continued retail rollout and international market entry
