Addressing the bone health-support market, Gadot Biochemical Industries has introduced a mineral blend, Cal2Mag, a combination of calcium citrate and magnesium citrate designed to provide long-term bone support.
Ohad Cohen, CEO of GBI, points to an increasing number of studies suggesting calcium ingestion by itself can increase arterial calcification, and argues the need for corresponding magnesium has become more critical. Cohen said: “Without magnesium, calcium supplements can cause a negative effect of vascular calcification, depositing itself on the aortic wall, kidneys, arteries and cartilage rather than in bones where it has the greatest benefit. Balancing calcium with the right amount of magnesium is good for potentially mitigating those harmful issues.”
While there are numerous calcium and magnesium mineral sources, the company says, formulators need to ensure they are using the right forms. Citrates are preferred as they are absorbed independent of food consumption, have a high mineral concentration, neutral flavour, low interference with other minerals, and are highly compatible with other nutrients.
Gadot says its blend is a highly bioavailable composition of 100 mg calcium and 50 mg magnesium citrates. One gram of the product amounts to 10% of the DV of calcium and 14% of the DV for magnesium.
The blend is made with an added binder, enabling tablet manufacturers to achieve four desirable results. It prevents segregation of the power mixture constituents, improves flow properties of the mixture, as well as improving compaction characteristics of the mix and eliminates excessive amounts of dust particles.
