Discover the power of 3D skin models

Introducing an important advancement - a uniquely simple and cost-effective solution that reliably, effectively and efficiently enables the culturing of animal-free 3D skin growth in vitro.

Artificially grown skin models have become an important substitute for actual skin to simulate the effects of different conditions on epidermal tissues. Inducing keratinocytes to differentiate into the various layers of epidermis requires direct exposure to air as well as culture media (an air-liquid interface) that supplies the nutrients for cell growth and differentiation.

This type of air-liquid interface culture can be accomplished by growing cells on a porous membrane carefully positioned in the culture well, allowing the upper surface of the cells to be air-exposed while the lower surface of the cells are fed and wetted by media through the pores of the growth membrane.

How does 3D skin tissue culture work?

Advance testing of epidermal tissue and simplify experimental protocols for establishing 3D skin tissue models with the unique Thermo Scientific Cell Culture Inserts System.

  • Cell growth system for tissues requiring air-liquid interface
  • Excellent growth substrate for keratinocytes; induces differentiation into various epidermis layers
  • Saves time and labor with extended feeding intervals

Test and Discover

The Thermo Scientific Cell Culture Inserts System offers one such porous membrane device that can be effectively used for small-scale 3D skin growth. Cells are seeded into the cell culture insert, and the insert is submerged in media inside the wells of a multi-well plate. Once the cell layer is established on the insert’s porous membrane, media on top of the membrane is removed, exposing the upper surface of the cells to the air.
