The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a food alert on behalf of TriOn Pharma, who are recalling two products from its vitamin D3 supplement range.
This is because their dosages exceed the label claim of 2000iu/ml, which can pose a significant risk to consumer health if taken long-term.
TriOn are requesting the callback of its Active D3 oral Drops and Active D3 oral Solution, with the affected product's batch codes being LS23317 and LS23318, respectively.
According to the FSA, excessive intake of vitamin D3 can lead to a range of adverse health effects, including hypercalcaeimia, lethargy, weakness, aches and pains, vomiting and cardiac dysrhythmias.
To ensure that consumers are aware of this recall, TriOn will be displaying notices in the retail stores the products are sold in with information on why the should not be consumed and should instead be returned for a full refund.
This finding highlights the importance of testing in the nutraceutical manufacturing process; checking the dosage of a product before reaches the consumer can help to preserve the integrity of the industry, while also ensuring that users don't experience negative side effects from supplement usage.
