The research will investigate the performance of a topical botanical formula against recurrent cold sores in adults

Sonoran University of Health Sciences has announced that it is launching a fully remote, randomised, double-blind clinical study evaluating a topical botanical formula for recurrent cold sores.

The university said that the trial will assess how natural formulations may support self-reported skin comfort and appearance in adults prone to cold sores.

The 26-week study will require no clinic visits. Instead, all participation will take place at home through the Alethios virtual human health research platform, designed to streamline participant experience.

Enroled individuals will complete short daily check-ins and, if a cold sore episode occurs, will apply an assigned topical ointment for ten days while tracking progress with photos and surveys.

"This study reflects our commitment to advancing integrative health solutions with rigorous, patient-friendly research methods," said Katie Stage, ND, RH (AHG), FABNG, principal investigator at Sonoran University's Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research.

We pair state-of-the-art molecular biology and phytochemistry with the traditions of clinical herbalism to develop evidence-based botanical formulations.

"Building on that approach, this virtual trial lowers the barriers for participation and ensures real-world evidence on outcomes that matter most to patients."

This study aims to set a new standard for cold sore treatments by comparing two university-developed natural formulations with an over-the-counter treatment and a placebo.

Sonoran University added that the double-blind design ensures credible and unbiased findings for patients and the health community.
