Salmon oil proves effective in managing long COVID, research reveals

Supplementing with omega-3 rich salmon oil significantly improved immune function, while also reducing the presence of inflammatory markers in those suffering with COVID-19

Findings from a recent study suggest that salmon oil can promote COVID-19 recovery.

The study, which was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, demonstrated that the omega-3 functional ingredient can improve immune responses and reduce inflammation in those with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms.1

The trial was run over a 28 day period, and participants were given 4g of salmon oil daily.

Researchers found that those taking OmeGo, an enzymatically liberated form of salmon oil, had significantly lower cytokine levels, which are commonly associated with the inflammatory response.

It also assisted the balancing of interferons in the body, which are essential for the maintenance of a balanced immune response and efficient viral clearance.

Lung barrier function and immune memory was also boosted, which points towards the nutraceutical’s ability to assist a long-lasting immune response.

These findings highlight the potential role of salmon oil in managing the symptoms of long COVID, which affects approximately 65 million people globally.

The lead author of the study and Head of Medical R&D at HBC, Dr Crawford Currie commented: "The Covid-19 pandemic cast immune health under the spotlight and since then, consumers worldwide have been exploring solutions to proactively boost their viral defences.”

“The broad-spectrum benefits of omega-3 from salmon oil in COVID-19 recovery stand as a beacon of hope, with this latest study demonstrating its power to modulate the immune response, aid recovery and reduce the risk of severe outcomes."
