OmniActive pepper extract increases metabolic rate during fasting

Results from the company’s latest study were presented at the Global Summit on Obesity, Diet and Nutrition and published in the Journal of Obesity and Therapeutics

OmniActive Health Technologies has announced the results of a study on its Capsimax product, showing significant increases in resting energy expenditure (REE) post consumption. The findings from this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled metabolic rate study involving 28 healthy adults were presented at the Global Summit on Obesity, Diet and Nutrition and published in the Journal of Obesity and Therapeutics.

REE represents the amount of energy expended by a person at rest to maintain the basic and vital functions of the body and accounts for up to 70% of total energy expenditure. Increases in energy expenditure have been linked to reduction in body fat. The findings specific to increases in REE are reportedly consistent with previously published study showing similar effects of Capsimax, which is an encapsulated, concentrated extract of capsaicinoids from red chili peppers (Capsicum annum). In the company’s first metabolic rate study, the extract increased metabolic rate in individuals during fed conditions, while this study measured the benefits of participants during fasting conditions.

"The primary objective was to measure changes in REE from baseline to post treatment at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours in comparison to placebo," said Deshanie Rai, PhD, VP, Global Scientific and Regulatory Affairs. "We observed robust and significant changes in REE with Capsimax supplementation during the first 3 hours of the study vs. the placebo group."

"These findings are consistent with our earlier published clinical results demonstrating a benefit of Capsimax on increased metabolic rate and adds another layer of substantiation that should help consumers feel confident that Capsimax is effective either with or without a meal," Dr Rai said.

Perceived changes in body temperature in response to Capsimax supplementation were also measured in the study. Dr Rai said: "Similar to previous findings, study participants reported an increased feeling of warmth with Capsimax supporting an "experiential benefit." These results reaffirm Capsimax's suitability for weight management support and sports nutrition, Omniactive says.
