Nearly 40% of adults struggle with swallowing supplements, study reveals

As a large number of adults and children alike struggle to take pills, the nutraceutical industry could enhance compliance through alternative dosage formats such as gummies and chewables

A recent study published in the British Pharmacological Society Journal  has found that nearly four in ten adults struggle to swallow tablets and supplements.

The observational study involved 152 participants, and looked into what difficulties individuals faced when taking solid oral dosage forms such as tablets and capsules.

Notably, 32% noted they had issued with swallowing tablets and capsules whole, while more than half had previously experienced difficulties during their lifetime.

Around half of these respondents noted that their difficulties generally stemmed from the size of a tablet or capsule — with dosage forms larger than 21.5mm in size were particularly challenging to swallow.

Alternative dosage forms take centre stage

Although tablets and capsules can be a great option for supplement users, many are starting to turn away from these forms in favour of more 'fun' and easy dosage forms.

Interestingly, gummies rich in vitamins accounted for nearly a quarter of the UK's gummy market in 2023, according to a report by Nova One Advisor.

These dosage forms can benefit consumers for a range of reasons, including:

  • Easy to take: They are chewable, so consumers are able to easily swallow such dosage forms
  • Appealing texture/taste: Gummy formulations are created to have an appealing texture and taste, unlike many botanical-based tablets
  • Better compliance: Since they are 'fun' and tasty, consumers are more likely to take them regularly — plus they can be treated as a snack

"This research highlights that adherence to supplement regimes including pills it is still a problem that affects many," commented Pauline Quigley, Brand Manager at Nature's Best.

"Swallowing a large capsule or tablet may be challenging for some, meaning consumers may miss doses that they require to maintain optimal health."

"Gummies are a great alternative — offering a more accessible and enjoyable way to maintain health, without compromising on quality. Their bright colours and great taste can also make them appealing to children; ideal for parents who find it challenging to get their little ones to take their daily vitamins," she concluded.
