Laboratoire PYC is introducing a clean label collagen food supplement designed to meet consumers' expectations of naturalness.
The use of fish hydrolysed collagen and vitamin C is nothing new in nutricosmetics, the company says. According to a recent report (Frost & Sullivan), the market for collagen peptides continues to grow globally at a rate of 8% per year.
The company is presenting a collagen and vitamin C formula with a clean label composition, incorporating acerola extract, fruit powders and natural flavours combined with fish collagen hydrolysate. The sweetness of the supplement is provided by steviol glycosides from stevia.
The company’s R&D team aimed to reduce the list of ingredients to a minimum, aiming to enable everyone to consume the supplement for its health benefits without superfluous ingredients.
The clean label work undertaken over the last 5 years is accompanied by a programme to industrialise eco-responsible packaging within the company.
Additional clinical studies have reportedly confirmed the properties of collagen when taken orally in recent years: hydration, firmness and elasticity of the skin are reinforced with doses of between 5g and 10g per day after 8 weeks of intake. Type I collagen is recommended for the skin as its hydrolysed form has an absorption rate of around 90%, the company says.
European authorities also recognise the essential role of vitamin C in the synthesis of collagen in the skin with the claim: "Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin". Indeed, vitamin C is a cofactor for the enzymes responsible for collagen synthesis. Research has also shown it acts directly on DNA to increase transcription and stabilise procollagen messenger RNA, the company says, thus maintaining the intercellular amount of collagen.
