AV Laboratories positions all-20 amino acid complex AVL SOM3 at the forefront of skin longevity

New research from the University of Colorado Boulder underpins the patented technology, offering formulators a precision-balanced amino acid platform targeting collagen, elastin and long-term skin resilience

New research from the University of Colorado Boulder has highlighted the potential role of amino acids in supporting skin longevity, with AV Laboratories arguing that the ingredients could offer a more foundational approach to skincare innovation.

The study, conducted at the AVL Molecular Research Center, examined skin cells to investigate factors associated with healthier-looking and more resilient skin with time.

According to the company, the findings suggest that amino acids may play a more significant role in longevity-focused skincare formulations than previously recognised.

Much of the longevity conversation has so far been centred on high-profile molecules associated with NAD+ and "breakthrough" molecules, but AV Laboratories said its research had pointed to something more fundamental: amino acids.

As the building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin, amino acids play a key role in supporting attributes such as skin firmness, elasticity, smoothness and hydration.

AV Laboratories said the research reinforces the importance of their role in the development of next-generation skincare products designed to support skin quality with time.

"Amino acids are fundamental, but they are not simple," said Dr Kevin Flynn, Molecular Biologist at AV Laboratories.

The science is in the balance: the right amino acids, in the right ratios, at the right concentrations. That level of precision is what separates a basic formulation approach from a true skin longevity platform.

The company said the research highlights the potential for amino acid-based technologies to contribute to the growing skin longevity category, which continues to gain traction among both brands and consumers.

Alongside the research, AV Laboratories is promoting its patented AVL SOM3 molecular skincare technology, which incorporates all 20 amino acids and is designed to support skin structure, elasticity, hydration and overall skin appearance.

According to the company, the platform was developed using insights gained through its work in IVF and advanced cell culture systems.

"That experience shaped how we think about skincare," explained Ami Mezei, CEO and co-founder of AV Laboratories.

Consumers are asking more from their products today. They want formulas that feel aligned with wellness, longevity and long-term skin quality.

"But real innovation requires scientific discipline. It is not only about what goes into a formula. It is about how precisely those ingredients are balanced."

AV Laboratories added that AVL SOM3 is manufactured in an FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facility, which it said helps ensure the quality control and consistency required to produce complex amino acid-based formulations.

"The future of skincare is longevity," said Dr Flynn.

Amino acids deserve to be at the forefront of that future because they are foundational to the visible qualities people care about most: firmness, elasticity, smoothness, hydration and resilience.
