Kyowa Hakko delves into the science behind Cognizin at Nutrition for the Ageing Brain Symposium

Kyowa Hakko presented research on the nootropic's cognitive health benefits, including improved performance, alertness and reaction times

At the 5th Symposium on Nutrition for the Ageing Brain hosted by ILSI Europe, Kyowa Hakko explored the science behind its nootropic citicoline ingredient, Cognizin.

Hosted in Chania, Greece, the event gathered international experts to explore how diet and nutrition can influence cognitive health and ageing.

During the event, Kyowa Hakko's VP of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, Danielle Citrolo gave a talk titled "Unlocking Brain Health: Evaluating the Role of Cognizin Citicoline in Cognitive Function". 

It highlighted the vast-spanning clinical research conducted on the ingredient, as well as Cognizin's capacity to support brain health across a variety of age groups.

Alongside Eri Nakazaki, Health Science Department Manager at Kirin Holdings, Citrolo reviewed key outcomes from randomised controlled trials, neuroimaging studies and behavioural assessments.

A new study presented at the event also highlighted Cognizin's effectiveness in supporting attention and focus in healthy middle-aged adults — with the main findings being:

  • Improvements in sustained reaction times
  • Increased sustenance in cognitive performance, including alertness, processing speed and cognitive stamina
  • Quicker rapid visual information processing (RVIP) reaction time

The scientific session also delved into citicoline's mechanisms of action, including its role in phospholipid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis and mitochondrial function.

“Cognizin is backed by decades of clinical and preclinical research, and we're proud to share out latest findings with the scientific community,” noted Citrolo.

“Our recent findings reinforce the value of Cognizin as a nutritional intervention, which aligns with the goals of healthy cognitive ageing," concluded Nakazaki.
