Bio-gen marigold extract improves cognitive function

Observational and interventional studies have suggested that a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin may protect the relevant areas of our brain

A recent study has indicated supplementation with Lute-gen, a formulation from Bio-gen Extracts comprising lutein & zeaxanthin-isomers in a 5:1 ratio, supports cognitive function, specifically visual memory, the ability to recall things we have seen, and episodic memory, things we have experienced.

Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, this study found supplementation was associated with greater improvements in visual episodic memory and visual learning as compared to a placebo. The two-arm, parallel-group, six-month randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted among 90 subjects aged 40-75. They received either 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin daily or a placebo over 6 months (shorter treatment period compared to other studies of 12-24 months).

Observational and interventional studies have suggested that a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin may protect the relevant areas of our brain due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also possible the compounds strengthen memory processes in the cortex, cortical and subcortical structures and circuits within the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe, the company says.

Improvements in visual memory are valuable on their own. Maintaining visual memory may be even more important, however, considering the relationship that has been identified between visual memory and cognitive decline. “With this study, brand owners can now pair visual health, cognitive function and healthy aging products with a single ingredient – Lute-gen,” the company said. The ingredient can be marketed across all age groups, for consumers looking for a clean-label and safe product.
