Bio-gen Extracts has established a multi-year partnership with Loughborough University to evaluate the impact of supplementation with TruBeet on exercise performance and cardiovascular health.
TruBeet is a standardised extract of red beetroot, containing >6% of inorganic nitrate, a compound shown to increase performance and muscle oxygen extraction during a 2-hour endurance exercise test. The ingredient is aimed at applications in a growing segment of the nutraceutical industry: sports & active nutrition.
The partnership is planned to add value to the ingredient with dedicated research from the team at Loughborough University. With investment in value-added research, and validated safety & efficacy of the ingredient, brand owners can improve their consumer offering with TruBeet.
Dr Stephen Bailey, supervisor of the research, said: “Dietary nitrate has emerged over the last decade as a nutritional strategy to improve aspects of cardiovascular function, such as lowering blood pressure, and to improve physiological and performance responses during different types of exercise. Through this partnership with Bio-gen Extracts, we will conduct a series of human clinical trials to assess the potential of dietary nitrate supplementation, administered as TruBeet, to improve exercise performance and cardiovascular function.
“These trials are important to further understanding of the efficacy of dietary nitrate supplementation to improve human cardiovascular health and exercise performance. They will also provide important information on the conditions in which nitrate supplementation has greater potential to improve cardiovascular health and exercise performance, which will help inform dietary nitrate supplementation recommendations.”
