The Regional University Hospital of Malaga, in collaboration with the Spanish companies Genosa, Synlab and Solvitae Medical, has started a clinical study to confirm the potential efficacy of a food supplement called Endothelyx 45 on the improvement of the symptoms associated to the so-called “Long Covid”, as well as the regulation of certain analytical parameters in patients who were diagnosed with Covid-19 and passed the acute phase, but they still have symptoms that affect their quality of life.
The study will last six months and will allow to confirm if the quality of life of these people improves.
It is estimated that 10% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 continue to present symptoms that include chronic fatigue, weakness, joint and muscle pain (myalgia), migraine, memory and hair loss, dyspnea, arrhythmia, pulmonary fibrosis, hypertension, platelet aggregation and certain imbalances in analytical markers related to coagulation, inflammation and oxidation.
Endothelyx 45® contains an optimal combination of flavonoids and polyphenols which ... show a high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity
Doctors want to verify a line of research that is relating these symptoms to the socalled endothelial dysfunction. Endothelial cells are found in the inner lining of the arteries and their proper functioning is crucial for the maintenance of adequate cardiovascular health, regulating vascular tone, the balanced production of vasodilator and vasoconstrictor factors, blood pressure and fluidity of the blood, among others.
Endothelyx 45® contains an optimal combination of flavonoids and polyphenols coming from olive and bitter orange which according to a wide bibliography show a high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Inflammation and oxidation are determining factors in endothelial dysfunction.
Endothelial cells are also part of the smooth muscle, the intestine and, in general, organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys and testicles. This list, in general terms, coincides with the areas where it has been observed that more damage occurs in Covid-19, either because it attacks cells or because it alters the vascular system and the blood pressure of the tissues.
Recent publications indicate that the role of the endothelium is key in the greater severity of symptoms and global affectation, as well as in the post-Covid phase.
Another mechanism to be studied is an excess of oxidative stress generated in the cellular mitochondria that would alter endothelial function.
The Regional Hospital inaugurated a specific division for people with Post-Covid symptoms that allows to attend to these people and help them in the improvement of said symptoms. The principal investigators are Dr. José María Reguera (Head of the Infectious Area) and Dr. Lucia Valiente (Coordinator of the Post-Covid division).
The company Synlab collaborates in the study by providing their analytical specialization. Andrés Garrido, general director of Solvitae Medical, sl, promoter of the study and owner of the product, states that “we are all very focused on infection by Covid-19 and the damage it is producing in every way, but we cannot forget the high number of people whose contagion is impacting their quality of life and, sometimes, for a long time. I wish this study could be of help”.
Madrid 28035 Carlos Peña, Genosa CEO, believes that "our admiration for the doctors who, in addition to suffering the drama of this pandemic, also have time to continue investigating, showing sensitivity to all those affected." "It will be a satisfaction for us to be able to help, since our company was born to give value to the olive grove and try to improve people's lives”.
