A research trial, sponsored by H&H Research, the research arm of global health and nutrition company, H&H Group, has revealed new evidence that Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil is effective in relieving pain in adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
The Swisse research team, alongside CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and Aker BioMarine, are winners of the NutraIngredients Asia Awards in the category of Nutrition Research Project of the Year, which recognises the best game-changing nutrition research initiative that pushes the boundaries of nutritional science.
Osteoarthritis is considered one of the most common chronic inflammatory conditions of the joints and is caused by a breakdown in cartilage which leads to pain, swelling and limited joint mobility. Often the condition gets worse with age. Currently, there are no cures, but there are short term treatment options which focus on symptom relief typically through non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics to minimise the pain. However, these may have side-effects.
The 6 month study was undertaken by 235 adults aged between 40 and 65years old diagnosed with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee and looked at the effects of Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil (Superba BOOST) (4g) on reducing pain in comparison to a placebo.
The participants consumed either 4g of krill oil or the placebo, which was mixed vegetable oil. Knee outcomes were then assessed using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) numeric scale (normalized to scores of 0–100).
We're proud to have worked alongside CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) to support this breakthrough trial; it's a defining moment for H&H Group and our ambitious and dedicated team at H&H Research
Adults who took the Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil over the 6-month period saw a significant reduction in pain and an improvement in knee stiffness and physical mobility, when compared to the group who were taking the placebo.
Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil (Superba BOOST) is a high-quality, sustainably sourced supplement to assist with the relief of mild arthritis symptoms and help support heart, brain and eye health. The product contains krill oil which parent company, H&H Group, sources from Aker BioMarine’s Antarctic Krill Fishery – which is rated ‘A’ by the sustainable fisheries partnership (the highest rating available) and certified sustainable by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council). The oil extracted from the krill species Euphausia superba – a small crustacean living in large swarms in the Southern Ocean - is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
These promising results demonstrate the efficacy of krill oil and its omega 3 fatty acid (and the Swisse High Strength Deep Sea Krill Oil) as a successful alternative in helping pain and mobility issues for adults with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
Hanno Cappon, Chief Technology Officer at H&H Group, said: “We're proud to have worked alongside CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) to support this breakthrough trial; it's a defining moment for H&H Group and our ambitious and dedicated team at H&H Research. The trial's positive outcome is extremely significant in our mission to promote health and wellbeing globally, through innovation in sustainably sourced products. We look forward to supporting more scientific trials like this one.”
Line Johnsen, Vice President of Science and Regulatory Affairs at Aker BioMarine, said: “We are very happy with the results from this well-executed trial revealing an alternative treatment, without side effects, for people suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. This partnership between Aker BioMarine and H&H Research exemplifies the strength of research collaboration, combining expertise and resources to tackle important scientific questions that help to improve people’s health.”
