The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a list of establishments in the US that have previously sold recalled items from the Diamond-Shruumz brand.
The organisation urges people in the US to report any sightings of Diamond-Shruumz brand gummies, cones and chocolate bars in shops, as they have been deemed unsafe for consumption.
The product range has been associated with 113 cases of illness and 42 hospitalisations, as well as the potential death of 2 individuals.
A range of serious symptoms were reported by those who consumed the snacks, including seizures, loss of consciousness, abnormal heart rates, nausea and vomiting.
The product range offered by Diamond-Shruumz was intended to act as a functional food ingredient, with mushrooms such as lion’s mane and chaga featuring in their formulations.
The FDA is currently investigating further into what is causing these adverse reactions, and believes that muscimol, a molecule found in Amanita muscaria mushrooms is responsible for the symptoms seen in users.
The organisation recommended that "Retailers should not sell or distribute any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, or Gummies, and should hold the product in a secure location and contact the recalling company to initiate the return and refund."
It also stressed that these products may appeal to younger children, and that they should be made aware of the significant risks associated with their consumption.
