The dietary supplement industry is increasingly grappling with the challenge of adulterated botanical ingredients, which can jeopardize the safety and effectiveness of finished products. In response to these risks, Giellepi has conducted a rigorous analytical study to validate the authenticity and potency of its bromelain-based ingredient, BROMEYAL®.
Bromelain, a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from the fruit or stem of pineapple, is widely used for its health benefits, such as reducing swelling and alleviating joint discomfort. However, the surge in demand for natural ingredients has attracted unethical practices, with some unscrupulous players adulterating these ingredients to increase their profits.
To address this issue, Giellepi conducted a comparative analysis of BROMEYAL® against three generic bromelain samples from international sources as well as a standard recognized by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). The study assessed their enzymatic activity and total protein content, and employed SDS-PAGE and Western blot analyses to confirm the presence of bromelain in each sample.
Figure 1. Bromelain content measured with Western blot analysis. Results are expressed as % of bromelain on total proteins.
The results revealed that BROMEYAL® was the only ingredient to demonstrate the presence of bromelain with enzymatic activity matching its declared potency, thereby confirming its authenticity and quality. This study underscores the importance of partnering with trustworthy suppliers who provide high-quality, standardized botanical ingredients. Such diligence is crucial for producing dietary supplements that are both safe and effective. Relying solely on price can expose companies to the risk of receiving adulterated or low-quality materials. By choosing BROMEYAL®, you ensure the purity and effectiveness essential to meeting consumer expectations. For details on the study results, reach out to our team.
