Polaris is launching Omegavie DHA 800 Qualitysilver algae oil, designed to answer challenges in the value chain including R&D and regulatory concerns.
Omegavie comes directly from green omega-3 resources: microalgae (Schizochytrium sp. strain). These microorganisms comprise vitamins, proteins, pigments, enzymes and also provide PUFAs from plant-based and sustainable origins.
“During the past few years, Polaris has chosen to focus on the source of tomorrow’s Omega-3: microalgae. The increasing demand for Omega-3 by the world’s population will be a major challenge over the next two decades. Polaris has always been committed to the use of fisheries co-products and raw materials from sustainable fisheries, but today we need to go further. This is the reason why we have focused our strategic development on microalgae” said Louis-Marie MARTIN VP Sales & Marketing.
Polaris has been working to improve the stability of microalgae, and the company’s Qualitysilver technology is designed to protect the oil from oxidation, which degrades its beneficial qualities and shelf life. The algae oil contains a minimum 800 mg/g of DHA, while it has less than 3% saturated fatty acid profile. The oil is in triglyceride form, which is a natural and highly bioavailable form of Omega-3, the company said.
“Offering high concentrations allows our customers to free up space in their capsules and to develop formulations with other active ingredients. It can save up to 30% of space. Smaller capsules mean smaller packaging, reduced costs and carbon impact, more storage space on the shelf. It also means only one capsule a day of a smaller size, making it easier to swallow for end consumers” said Stephanie Lennon, NPD and Formulation Manager.
Omegavie microalgae is cultivated in a strictly controlled green environment. It’s extracted using a natural enzymatic process using water and no solvents. It is then refined, purified and deodorised in France, which eliminates potential traces of residual contaminants, the company claims.
The product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, non-GMO, free from allergens, and guaranteed not to contain toxins. It meets food regulations and is available for all markets, through Polaris’ network of local distributors.
