Probiotic shows promise in managing multiple sclerosis

The probiotic has the ability to inhibit C. perfringens, a toxin-producing bacteria which has a causal impact on the onset of multiple sclerosis

An in-vitro study has exhibited the beneficial effects of a juice-based probiotic for the management of multiple sclerosis (MS).

The study, which was carried out by Dr A. Reza Kamarei, Dr Howard F. Robins and Eric Finkelstein was published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine and Care, and exhibited the ability of the probiotic to effectively inhibit the epsilon toxin-producing bacteria Clostridium perfringens.

Targeting a bacteria implicated in MS pathology

Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disease in young adults, and disease onset can occur in patients at just 20 years old.

There are currently nine oral medications which have gained FDA approved for the condition — all of which are associated with a range of unpleasant side effects.

C. perfringens, a disease-causing bacteria that produces epsilon toxin in the body, has been implicated as a trigger of this autoimmune disease.

Since the bacteria can be managed through dietary interventions, Doctor Biome set out to produce a probiotic that can effectively inhibit or mask the impacts of the bacteria, potentially easing a patient’s symptoms.

Chief Science and Technology Officer of Doctor's Biome, Dr A. Reza Kamarei explained: "We are delighted that we have developed a patent-pending juice-based probiotic medical food for the dietary management of MS that inhibits the growth of both type B and type D epsilon toxin-producing Clostridium perfringens — which, according to the most recent published clinical findings, are thought to be the cause or trigger of MS."

Doctor's Biome Medical Food for dietary management of Multiple Sclerosis (MF-MS) under the supervision of a physician is manufactured with 60 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of proprietary Doctor's Biome Signature Probiotic Blend (DBSPB) in 2 fl. oz of sterilised organic green fruit and vegetable juice.
