The leading research clinician in tocotrienol and diabetic complications and Endocrinologist Specialist Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Khalid Abdul Kadir has been conferred the winner of NutraChampion in the prestigious NutraIngredients-Asia Awards 2020.
Organized by NutraIngredients-Asia.com, an online nutraceutical industry news portal owned by William Reed Business Media (WRBM), the NutraIngredients-Asia Awards 2020 is being held for the third time in the Asia Pacific region. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony was conducted online and award winners were announced virtually on the NutraIngredients- Asia platform.
Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Khalid Abdul Kadir of the Monash University Malaysia was nominated by ExcelVite Sdn Bhd (the research collaborator for his tocotrienol clinical trials) for the NutraChampion Award and after a stringent evaluation, we are proud to announce that he was selected as the winner for this year’s NutraChampion Award, by an expert panel of independent judges from the industry.
Prof Khalid Abdul Kadir and his team at the Monash University Malaysia have been conducting human clinical trials with EVNol SupraBio patented and bioenhanced full spectrum palm tocotrienol complex in the form of softgels (Tocovid SupraBio) produced by Hovid Berhad – one of Malaysia’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

Prof Khalid has an illustrious career in the medical field. He was the Dean and Foundation Director of one of the largest public hospitals in Malaysia, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1990 to 1997 and 1996 to 2000 respectively. He was subsequently appointed as the foundation Professor of Medicine by Monash University Malaysia in 2004 and was the first Head of the Clinical School in Johor Bahru. Due to this immense contribution to public health, he was awarded the Tun Abdul Razak Research Award in 1986, the Asia Pacific Society Clinical Nutrition Award 1996, the National Science Award Malaysia in 1997 and also the joint winner of prestigious the MERDEKA Award for medicine, science and technology in 2008.
His interest and research of palm oil and tocotrienol started in the 80s. He is the leading researcher at Monash University, School of Medicine, in conducting clinical trials to study the unique beneficial effects of EVNol SupraBio softgels in diabetic complications, particularly in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Diabetic Nephropathy and Diabetic Retinopathy. He has since published numerous papers on these effects.
Diabetes is a major global public health concern. According to WHO, between 2000 and 2016, there was a 5% increase in premature mortality from diabetes. In high-income countries the premature mortality rate due to diabetes decreased from 2000 to 2010 but then increased in 2010-2016. In lower-middle-income countries, the premature mortality rate due to diabetes increased across both periods. In 2014, 8.5% of adults aged 18 years and older had diabetes. In 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths and in 2012 high blood glucose was the cause of another 2.2 million deaths.
To date, 3 clinical studies have been published by Prof Khalid Abdul Kadir and his colleague from Monash University (Malaysia) that specifically indicated that EVNol SupraBio helps in reducing serum creatinine levels and improving the nerve conduction velocity in diabetic patients.

“Long-term diabetes comes with various complications that could impairs the quality of life and causes significant morbidity as well as mortality. Hence, it is crucial to manage these complications as soon as possible from deteriorating. My work with palm tocotrienol complex started a long time ago when I was commissioned by PORIM (Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia, now known as MPOB) to look at the research using tocotrienol rich Vitamin E derived from palm oil in various conditions.
“My research team and I started off with working on tissue culture and rats. We were encouraged by our work with palm tocotrienol provided by PORIM for animal study, and now we have done more human clinical trials on the benefit of EVNol SupraBio palm tocotrienol complex on diabetes complications.
