BI Nutraceuticals cuts water consumption at facility in Southern California

On track to save nearly 2.5 million gallons of water in 2014

BI Nutraceuticals, a US supplier of dietary supplements and functional food ingredients, has significantly reduced its annual water consumption and says it is on track to save nearly 2.5 million gallons of water year-on-year.

The Long Beach, CA-based company attributes the reduction to several factors including the addition of a more efficient steam sterilisation unit, retrofitting existing steam units to make them more sustainable and making adjustments to its irrigation schedule.

'Availability of water is always a concern and this year’s drought in Southern California only further motivated us to evaluate our water usage and look for ways to reduce our consumption,' said George Pontiakos, President and CEO of BI Nutraceuticals. 'We are proud to have taken this important step and are evaluating other ways we can improve our processes to make them more green.'

BI Nutraceuticals currently offers more than 200 ingredients that have been determined as safe for use in foods and beverages by the FDA or FEMA (Flavors and Extracts Manufacturers Association).

The company’s Protexx HP Green Steam process is said to be the industry’s only species-specific, organic sterilisation method.
