BDA welcomes government’s step forward on Soft Drinks Industry Levy

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) welcomes the government’s draft legislation for the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, the next stage in introducing the levy on sugar-sweetened beverages from April 2018

BDA Chief Executive, Andy Burman, said: “We are pleased that the government has taken this next step toward introducing the Soft Drinks Industry Levy. The Sugar Tax is not enough on its own to solve the crisis of childhood obesity, but is a positive move in the right direction, and an important sign of intent from the government.”

“The BDA will continue to work with the Department of Health and Public Health England to support other areas, such as product reformulation, and will push the government to further strengthen its childhood obesity plan of action.”

The British Dietetic Association, founded in 1936, is the professional association for dietitians in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It is the nation’s largest organisation of food and nutrition professionals with more than 8000 members. The BDA is also an active trade union.
